Getting Closer with The Great Company behind Cuba Libre
Have you ever drink Cuba Libre? Cuba Libre is a mixed drink that made of cola, lime, and white rum. It is an old drink. The origins of the Original Cuba Libre trace back to Cuba’s War for Independence in 1900. It means the drink is 110 years old.
When we talk about Cuba Libre, there is a name behind all the drink greatness, Bacardi. Bacardi is a spirits company founded at Santiago de Cuba in 1862, when founder Don Facundo Bacardi Massó was inspired to create rum, as we know it today. The main Product of Bacardi is Bacardi Rum, which is the main ingredient of the famous Bacardi Cuba Libre. Bacardi Cuba Libre is the world’s favorite and best-selling Cuba Libre. Eugenio Mendez, Global Category Director Rums for Bacardi said that “More than 80 billion Bacardi Cuba Libre cocktails have been served since 1900, and close to 6,000,000 are consumed every day around the world”. Bacardi is headquartered in Hamilton, Bermuda and has a 16-member board of directors led by the original founder’s great-great grandson, Facundo L. Bacardi. The President Bernard F. Ramirez and Co-President Charles M. Hernandez, also play a large part in production and sales. Bacardi sells in excess of 200 million bottles per year in nearly 100 countries. The company’s sales in 2007 were US$5.5 billion, up from $4.9 billion in 2006.
As the largest family owned Spirits Company in the world, Bacardi has made a commitment to the environment as a part of Bacardi Limited’s corporate responsibility policy. One of the Bacardi’s efforts for the environmental concern is the installation of the largest wind turbine in Puerto Rico. With this effort, Bacardi wants to inspire other companies to get involved in using renewable energy. As we know, most of companies are still using fossil fuels as their main energy source, which is not good for our environment. The Bacardi’s wind turbine is designed to utilize the energy of natural wind to power Bacardi’s distillery. By the use of this wind turbine, Bacardi can offset more than 900 tons of CO2 a year. Another ‘green’ action made by Bacardi is they treats waste water and uses it in the towers during their production process, which saves approximately 22,000 gallons of water per day. Bacardi is also working with the government of Puerto Rico to provide incentives and support to those working towards greener energy solutions.
Since we know the corporate responsibility activities of Bacardi, we should be proud of drinking Bacardi Cuba Libre. Because, just by drinking it, we are take part in saving our environment.
